Water Dragon Tattoo Designs - In the Far East, the dragon represents the elements and the four points of the compass and dragons are simultaneously a symbol of Water, Earth, Underworld and Sky. The dragon is a culturally far-ranging character whose apparent bad temper should be interpreted as simply amoral, neither good nor evil. The forces of nature are not human-hearted, representing as they do the cycle of life and death, followed again by birth and renewal. Natures nurtures and nature destroys. So too does the dragon.
Aquatic dragons cause the springs to bubble up, but they also drown people. Eastern Native American myths tell of great horned dragons that live underwater and lure people to their watery graves. Loch Ness has its monster, and British Columbia's Lake Okanogan has its Ogopogo, although there haven't been any documented drowning cases yet. (Nor any official sightings, for that matter.)
The medieval dragon can appear as a sea serpent, as in some paintings of St. George. The artist may have been influenced by the Greek myth of Perseus, who slew a sea monster to save Andromeda. In Cambodia, legend tells of the water dragon that possessed a jewel that glittered like lightning, whose flashing brought on the rain.
Jungian psychologists might suggest that the water dragon symbolizes the deeper reaches of our subconscious. Or that the dragon in general stands for fears or repressed feelings or emotions. Less contentious is the dragon's association with things so magical, elemental, and often mysterious, that we generally do not question his actions. Rain, lightning, floods, comets in the night sky - all the chaos and uncertainty of the Universe can be represented by the symbol of the dragon .
And when we come to navigate uncharted waters, where all manner of unknown perils await us, on the edge of the map we simply write - "Here be Dragons - Beware!"
